Brisbane’s The Calile named the best hotel in Oceania, plus a new Tasmanian addition to the World’s 50 Best

The Queensland jewel takes out the regional top spot in the World's 50 Best Hotels, and a sandstone beauty in Hobart cracks the list for the very first time.

Brisbane’s sophisticated urban resort The Calile has once again been named one of the best hotels in the world at the second edition of the World’s 50 Best Hotels, announced in London overnight.

The Calile was named The Best Hotel in Oceania, and came in at number 25 on the list, slipping slightly from number 12 in 2023, making it only one of two properties from Australia, New Zealand or the Pacific Islands to make the prestigious list. The new Oceanic addition to the 2024 list is The Tasman in Hobart, sneaking in at number 49.

Located in the palm-fringed precinct known as James Street in Fortitude Valley, The Calile is marked by its sweeping mid-century curves, brutalist concrete pillars and lush pool. Designed by local architects Richards & Spence, the 175-room hotel is achingly attractive, thanks to a subtle pink sand and pistachio green palette and miles of marble. And isn’t the mark of a truly great hotel one that makes itself a destination in its own right? With one of Brisbane’s best restaurants, Hellenika, settled in its gorgeous confines, and several bars and cafes open everyday, a stay at The Calile is like stepping into a city of its very own.

Down south, The Tasman opened in Tasmania in 2022, marking the arrival of Marriott’s Luxury Collection brand to Australia, and is set in the beautiful sandstone-walled St Mary’s Hospital. After a lengthy and meticulous renovation, the 152-room luxury hotel is now home to several stylish suites with vaulted ceilings and ornate fireplaces. The extensive offerings don’t stop there though, with Peppina, one of Tasmania’s best restaurants, calling The Tasman home.

The list comes courtesy of The World’s 50 Best Hotels Academy, which saw experts rank and rate hotel operations from arrival to departure, including room comfort, quality of food and beverage offerings and onsite facilities. Gourmet Traveller‘s own Victoria state editor Michael Harden serves as chair for Oceania, and is a part of the wider 580-strong judging panel.
