Eighteen months after it opened, Australian visitors were finally able to check in to Hotel Britomart, New Zealand’s first 5 Green Star hotel. While the sustainability credentials are impressive, it also happens to be one of the most stylish places to stay in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland).
Located in the heart of the city, the hotel is discreetly tucked into a laneway in the vibrant Britomart precinct, offering an oasis of urban calm, Many of the hotel’s 99 rooms offer expansive views of the Waitematā harbour, with the Auckland ferry terminal located just a short stroll away. Inside, you’ll find sleek Scandinavian design paired with flourishes of old-world charm, such as wallpaper-lined drinks cabinets, which come well-stocked with locally crafted tipples and treats.
Throughout the hotel, you’ll spy a number of eye-catching artworks by New Zealand artists, as well as handmade ceramics by Auckland potter Elena Renker. The hotel’s sustainable credentials mean the rooms are compact but thoughtfully designed, providing everything you nee for a sophisticated urban getaway.
Breakfast
If you’re in town for the weekend, you’ll find some of Auckland’s best producers right on your doorstep as the City Farmer’s Market takes over Takutai Square every Saturday from 8am. Indulge in a cornucopia of fresh pastries and small goods, as well as local delicacies, such as mussel fritters. Alternatively, head to all-day diner Amano for freshly baked Italian pastries or breakfast alfresco at The Store, serving up seasonal dare throughout the day.
Lunch
Hotel Britomart’s in house restaurant Kingi is a destination in its own right, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner daily with a focus on sustainably sourced seafood. Those wanting to luxuriate in some harbour views should book a table on the terrace at Soul Bistro & Bar, which has held the crown for Auckland’s best waterfront dining for more than 20 years. Yes, it’s a spot to see and be seen. But the food remains the real star.
Dinner
Those wanting to experience the very best – and most unique – produce New Zealand has to offer should clear their calendar for an evening at Pasture, where Ed Verner takes diners on a tasting menu that varies each night, comprising up to 20 course. For an equally impressive – but less intense experience – Sid Sahrawat pulls out all the stops at The French Café in Eden Terrace. Wine lovers should head to The Grove for one of the best cellars in the country – and excellent food.
Day trip
You don’t have to journey south to discover some of New Zealand’s best wineries (but don’t let us stop you…) Just a 35-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland will see you arrive in the small island paradise that is Waiheke, famous for its micro-climate that means it’s almost always warmer and sunnier than the city. Home to white sand beaches, lush pasture and rolling vineyards, Waiheke is a day-tripper’s delight. Just be sure to check the ferry timetable before you start touring the cellar doors. Tantalus Estate, Poderi Crisci and Casita Miro are our top stops for a long lunch.
Wander
Hotel Britomart shares its address with some of New Zealand’s leading fashion labels, including Maggie Marilyn, Trelise Cooper, Kathryn Wilson and Karen Walker. Take time to wander the alfresco laneways before heading to the Viaduct for some fresh sea air and super yacht spotting.
