While the dining table is at the centre of any Christmas celebration, there’s more to it than food. Here, six florists create arrangements inspired by their own feelings about Christmas.

“Christmas at my place is always very colourful. Pinks, reds, orange and lime greens – it’s not very traditional. I even have a pink Christmas tree at home that I love. I wanted the arrangement to reflect something I would have at home – boisterous, beautiful and fun.” Sean Cook, Mr Cook

“I wanted to create something inspired by nature, our love of being outdoors and our love of surrounding ourselves with the bush or the ocean or the mountains. This wreath made from boab skeleton leaves is a celebration of nature, its beauty and simplicity to be enjoyed in abundance over the festive season.” Tracey Deep, Tracey Deep Floral Sculptures, (02) 9318 1177

“I love roses and tree peonies. For me this brings back memories of Christmas Day, gathering flowers from my grandparents’ garden and placing small bouquets around the house. I would place them on the table in little vases and glasses found in their beautifully displayed glass cabinets. Roses are always part of my Christmas.” Simone Gooch, Fjura

“I like the idea of architectural floral arrangements. This is my version of a gothic Christmas. There is a medieval sense of decadence and absurdity, particularly when using such a vast number of roses to celebrate this one day in the year. I’m Italian, though, so it figures.” Lisa Cooper, Doctor Cooper Studio

“Christmas in summer always reminds me of eating fresh berries for dessert. Bougainvillea flowers are a quintessential Sydney-backyard summer flower. Though they don’t last very long once cut, their raspberry-coloured lantern and tinsel-like blooms are so festive. I adore the colour.” Aleksandra Schutz, Aleksandra

“December for me is all about summer, full of fresh, light greens and whites. I wanted to show a strong garden feeling, like when friends and family lovingly bring you hand-cut offerings from their garden. It’s very much a reflection of my family’s Christmas gatherings, very chilled, an organised chaos almost, but with some beauty and magic thrown in.” Myra Perez, My Violet
