Modern Mexican, a new outpost by a Japanese favourite, and a revamped classic an hour out of Sydney. These are the latest venues in town (or just slightly out of town) we’re loving this month.
The Wild Flower Bar & Dining
Summer lunching is easy on the NSW Central Coast, particularly at Bells at Killcare’s reimagined restaurant, The Wild Flower Bar & Dining. Highlights from the Mediterranean menu include tempura-light fritto misto, locally caught whole-grilled fish with herby salsa salmoriglio, and anchovy-studded cavolo nero. Retreat to the garden and sip Pol Roger by the glass, then stay the night if inclined.

Sonora
The power duo behind Bondi’s Mexican watering holes, Taquiza and Carbon, has opened Sonora, a neon-lit joint in Potts Point. It’s quintessential Mexican with modern flair; guacamole is tricked up with caperberries and charred artichoke, while tacos are bolstered with grilled octopus, wild mushrooms and quail. There’s also a hearty selection of tequila and organic mezcal to help get the fiesta started ¡Salud!

Chaco Bar
Beloved Darlinghurst izakaya Chaco Bar has divided their ramen and yakitori offering, opening an outpost dedicated to skewers and share-style dishes, while the original focuses on ramen. The new space in Potts Point is much larger than the first, with a long communal table and an island grill up the back. Choose your own offal adventure, or stay in the safe zone – just don’t bypass the silky crab chawanmushi.
