As far as reasons to celebrate go, the start of the Australian black truffle season is as good as any. While more and more farmers are getting into the lucrative truffle game each year, Manjimup, a timber town in Western Australia’s picturesque Southern Forests region, remains the industry’s engine room, with local growers harvesting six tonnes of the exotic fungus in 2014. Although fresh truffles can be admired in myriad ways (shaved; sliced and sandwiched between brie; hashtagged on Instagram), the town’s annual Truffle Kerfuffle festival remains WA’s premier Tuber melanosporum party. As with previous events, many of the state’s best chefs will be headed south for the weekend – Kiren Mainwaring (Co-op Dining), Joel Valvasori-Pereza (Lalla Rookh) and David Coomer (Pata Negra) are just some of the names on the bill – as will heavyweight interstate talent including former Garagistes chef Luke Burgess (pictured) and Matthew Evans from Gourmet Farmer. The gala dinners and lunches are selling fast, and tickets to masterclasses, farmers’ markets and truffle hunts are still available. See you down there (and dressed warmly, we might add).

Truffle Kerfuffle will be held at Fonty’s Pool Caravan Park (Seven Day Rd, Manjimup) from Friday 26 June to Sunday 28 June. Tickets available from trufflekerfuffle.com.au.
