Exciting things keep happening on New South Wales’ South Coast. While we’ve been slogging through the coldest part of the year, a clutch of operators in the Eurobodalla Shire have been working tirelessly – preparing a suite of venues that are sure to become hits the moment the daily mercury gets back above 20 degrees again.

There have been the old-school motels that have been given retro refits, such as Batemans Bay’s The Isla, which opened back in April; then there’s been Merivale CEO Justin Hemmes’ well-documented shopping spree down in Narooma, which has so far yielded The Quarterdeck, The Whale Inn, Queen Chow and Lynch’s Hotel. And now, we have The Patch, in Tomakin, a new family-friendly 226-seat restaurant by the group behind Sydney and Melbourne’s expansive Acre cafes.

Tomakin is a small town of just over 1000 people. The Patch is taking over what was once the local sports club – a longtime hub for the community. (It served as a community refuge during the bushfires a few summers ago.) The club left some big shoes to fill, and The Patch is respecting that history by delivering a space that’s designed to please crowds. On the menu, that means pastas, plenty of mains and snacks and woodfired pizzas. There are plans for monthly chefs’ dinners, live performances on Sundays and other community-focused events.

The space itself takes advantage of the sport club’s big old bones. There’s a large outdoor area – serviced by a shipping container bar – and the interiors are light, bright, casual and coastal.
