The newest addition to Hobart’s burgeoning luxury accommodation line-up is The Tasman, a boutique hotel with 152 rooms spread over three buildings, which span three centuries. It also marks the arrival of Marriott’s Luxury Collection brand to Australia, with the promise of more to come.
The sandstone-walled St Mary’s Hospital was built in 1847 and now houses several stylish suites with vaulted ceilings and fireplaces, including the St David’s Park Suite, where you’ll find a handcrafted freestanding timber bath made from Tasmanian blackwood – the only one of its kind in Australia.
Downstairs, the heritage wing is home to the dark and sultry cocktail bar, Mary Mary, and chef Massimo Mele’s bright and spacious Peppina restaurant. Peppina is an all-day affair. One morning highlight is the Italian-inspired breakfast grazing table featuring charcuterie, fresh fruit and a selection of ever-changing hot dishes. In the evenings, it’s all about sophisticated seasonal takes on Italian classics, inspired by Mele’s upbringing in Naples.
As you move into the former government offices building, built in 1939, art deco influences are clear, while modern luxury reigns in the newly built Pavilion wing, where guests have 270-degree views encompassing kunanyi (Mount Wellington) to the harbourfront and the River Derwent. In every room, you’ll find a showcase of leading Tasmanian producers, from Lark Distillery to House of Arras.
