The giant glass cube of a function/tasting centre in d’Arenberg’s vineyards commands much visitor attention, yet the humble veranda restaurant in the adjacent farmhouse also holds much in its favour. There’s an idyllic view of gum trees and vines from the glass-framed dining room and paved patio, and a robust menu embracing the region’s best produce. Several signature dishes are entrenched for good reason – opulent lobster medallion with blue swimmer crab and prawn ravioli in lobster bisque; flawless passionfruit soufflé; soft-centred chocolate pudding – although the long menu roams broad cultural terrain. Flavours are bold and serves are generous, from braised kangaroo tail to pakoras with sweet potato kasundi and kachumber salad. d’Arenberg’s vast range of wines can be tried at the adjoining cellar door (which is encouraged between courses), and a few drops adorn dishes, including roussanne sorbet.
