Few Japanese and fewer travellers have visited the remote peninsula of Kunisaki on Kyushu, Japan’s most westerly island. “It’s really special and quite untouched,” says Walk Japan’s CEO Paul Christie, who has lived and farmed on the peninsula for 14 years. His home province and scores of less-travelled regions with deep roots in Japanese history and culture are included in the company’s extensive program of small-group and customised walking tours. Operating for 25 years, Walk Japan collaborates with family-run businesses and local experts on subjects as diverse as the poetry of Basho to Shugendo Buddhism.
