REVIEW
You can try and kid yourself by sticking to the raw and cured section of The Fish Shop’s menu, and while you’ll be rewarded with a knockout pickled octopus and white bean salad (speckled with punchy hits of dried olive), the real action is in the deep-fryer. Order a potato scallop before you even look at the wine list (beer-battered, chicken-salted potato being the perfect match to any drink) before getting stuck into a bowl of battered flathead, crisp and juicy, and unlike anything you’ll get from a takeaway. Strode’s fish sandwich burger belongs in Sydney’s top-five best burgers list, the combo of crumbed fish, bacon and jalapeños a must-try (and a must-eat-again-and-again). Recent refurbs have added some roomier tables and taken away some of the beach-shack clutter that made this place feel like a theme-park knock-off – now it just feels like a great spot for an afternoon wine and a deep-fried dinner.
