REVIEW
What to choose on Rosa Mitchell’s ever-changing seasonal menu? The pasta alone can slay you – six types to pick from, perhaps rustic ravioli or a ripper Sicilian-style linguine with prawns and pistachio pesto? Antipasti? Crusty sourdough goes well with the creamy buffalo mozzarella and chopped green olive. But then there’s the grilled calamari with witlof and a hint of chilli. Just relax. Easygoing waiters will sort your wine (or grappa) while you admire the treetop views. Main courses swing from fish of the day to veal saltimbocca with a side of Italian slaw – no trickery, just the excellent, classic cooking that has made Mitchell one of Melbourne’s best-loved culinary daughters. She’s often there, doing doubles in the open kitchen or a shift front of house. Canteen is a favourite of the corporate crew, who love the $5 cannoli and stovetop coffee; no wonder the place is jammed at lunch. And the best thing? It’s hard to make the wrong decision at Rosa’s.
