The arrival of Cipro has put pizza al taglio on the map for Sydney. Regular round-pie faithfuls, however, can still rely on the likes of Rosso Pomodoro (90-91/24 Buchanan St, Balmain, 02 9555 5924) and Via Napoli (Shop 3, 141 Longueville Rd, Lane Cove, 02 9428 3297) for some of the hottest offerings around town, while newcomer Da Orazio has considerably upped the stakes in Bondi (try the spicy sausage-topped Diavoletta and you’ll quickly see what we mean). La Rosa and Popolo defend their spots at the top of the ladder, as do Lucio Pizzeria (248 Palmer St, Darlinghurst, 02 9332 3766) and Pizza Mario (Shop 9, 417-421 Bourke St, Surry Hills, 02 9332 3633), which remains the go-to for the inner east. Mario‘s newer Rosebery branch, meanwhile, uses its much bigger, airier dining room to do a broader menu (including excellent fresh pasta dishes) and pizza that’s every bit as good as the original Northsiders Enopizzeria (Shop 5, 19 Grosvenor St, Neutral Bay, 02 9953 0022) and Cavallino (1 Yulong Ave, Terrey Hills, 02 9450 1777) are among the favourites north of the harbour, while over Bondi way, there’s no missing Pompei’s (126-130 Roscoe St, Bondi Beach, 02 9365 1233). Nearby challenger Vacanza (261 Bronte Rd, Waverley, 02 9090 2089) is now dishing up twice as much of the good stuff with a second outlet in Surry Hills (414 Bourke St, Surry Hills, 02 8964 6414).
