It’s no secret that Australians have a thing for Italian food. And given that some of the country’s top-ranked restaurants are run by Italian chefs, it’s no surprise. Fall a little deeper for the country’s food culture at the Italian Wine & Food Festival, which returns to Sydney later this month. Showcasing the best of the country’s fresh produce, wine and recipes, this year’s festival also features some of the city’s top talent, including Stefano Manfredi.

Joining Manfredi on-stage for cooking demonstrations throughout the day are the likes of Claudio Barzano of Roman restaurant Marta, Jonah’s chef Matteo Zamboni and Nino Zoccali of Pendolino, who will demonstrate how to prepare dishes including cacio e pepe, Roman-style pizza and Venetian-style red wine risotto with lardo. Nadine Conway, Joanna Savill and Roberta Muir will play host.

Those with a taste for Italian wine will be in good company among the many winemakers and importers offering the likes of Amarone, Barolo and more. Elsewhere, wine writer Huon Hooke will run hour-long masterclasses for those seeking to brush up on their knowledge of grappa, the red wines of Piedmont or Italy’s greatest white wine varieties and producers. An aperitivo bar will also be serving Spritzes and Moretti lager throughout the day.

Your snacking is in the safe hands of the people from Lucio Pizzeria, Jonah’s, Rocker and Via Napoli, while in the marketplace stalls include Cow & The Moon Gelato, Vannella Cheese and Goose on the Loose smallgoods, as well as the official prosciutto di Parma and Parmigiano-Reggiano consortiums, offering tastes of the real deal.

Children attend for free and there are plenty of activities to keep them busy too, including learning how to make different pasta shapes.
