Oskar Rossi and Frederica Andrisani’s Fun Dining project at Hobart café Room for a Pony only runs for another couple of months, which makes securing a reservation a big priority. Their “Italian-ish” dinners, running from Thursday to Sunday each week, are offering some of the best eating in town. Rossi grew up in Hobart, trained at Vue de Monde, and met his Italian partner, Andrisani, in Europe where they both had been working in a string of Michelin-starred restaurants. The menu, which changes weekly, has six or seven smallish plates, including some handmade pasta or a risotto, a few larger dishes, and a choice of desserts. Last week, tempura oysters, the batter blackened with squid-ink and balanced with a yuzu emulsion, a dish of raw kingfish cleverly seasoned with soy and wasabi, and another of whiting with fennel, tomato and rouille that sang of the Mediterranean did it for us. It’s a good option any night but with the dearth of serious dining in Hobart on Sundays, it becomes more of a godsend than a restaurant.
